The higher education of a parents is to counted toward the required period of residence

BVerwG 1 C 9.15 - Court decision from April 26, 2016

The birthplace principle, regulated in § 4 section 3 of the Nationality law (StAG) stipulates that a child of foreign parents will receive German citizenship when born within the country if a parent has resided legally in Germany for at least eight years at birth.

The Federal Administrative Court has now decided that a stay for the purpose of study will be credited to this time, if this was solidified later to a permanent residence.
